TV tonight: 'Modern Family,' 'Mad About Oscar,' 'CSI'
Posted February 19, 2013
ABC, 9 ET/PT
A typically funny and intricate outing of Modern Family embraces the idea that happy families don't just sometimes succumb to white lies and blackmail-greased deal making - that may be exactly what makes them happy families. The lies begin when Mitchell agrees to take care of Jay and Gloria's new baby and cascade in heightened but not unrealistic fashion. If you're among those who find Cam a bit too broad or who think Lily is too much of a brat, you'll see nothing tonight that changes your mind. (As amusing and, considering the way her parents indulge her, unsurprising as Lily's behavior can be, it may be time for other family members to start raising more strenuous objections.) But within the context of this episode and the show's universe, the behaviors all work as a piece, and they're lightened by enough warm moments to keep most fans happy.
Mad About Oscar With Katie Couric
ABC, 10 ET/PT
In case you haven't noticed, ABC is airing the Oscars on Sunday, which explains tonight's Oscar-themed outing of The Neighbors and this special episode of 20/20. Built around the movie academy's archives, the special offers a "greatest hits" salute featuring some of the show's best-remembered moments, along with rare behind-the-scenes footage. Yes, it's basically a commercial for Sunday's broadcast - but it could be a fun commercial.
CBS, 10 ET/PT
Do you hate crime-show episodes where one of the regulars becomes the chief suspect? Then you might want to avoid CSI tonight, which drags that hoary plotline out for Sara. Let's hope she actually did commit the murder; that, at least, would be different, though perhaps more Scandal than CSI.
