'The Voice': Two are cut and The Muppets come to play
Posted November 27, 2012
After Tuesday night's live results show, only six singers are left to compete for The Voice title. However, according to some of the mentors, that title isn't such a big deal.
"I didn't win one of these competitions," said Christina Aguilera, foreshadowing her own singer's fate, "but alongside Britney and Justin, we went on to dominate pop music," she added, perhaps a bit immodestly.
Nevertheless, the contenders were all up for a dramatic one-by-one elimination. There were interviews, performances and, best of all, Muppets! Here's how the night went.
During the battle rounds, Amanda Brown and Trevin Hunte sang Vision of Love. Tuesday, they reunited for Lady Gaga's Marry the Night, a song that ended in a yelling match between the two. Amanda Brown might have come out on top in that one.
First round of callbacks: Team Blake's Cassadee Pope made it through.
And then CeeLo, in a ridiculous green hat and top covered with reflective squares, performed Bein' Green on piano with Kermit the frog. It was a fun play on words but bizarre, to say the least. (The Muppets are featured on CeeLo's new Christmas album CeeLo's Magic Moment on the song All I Need is Love.)
Kermit was not the only Muppet on The Voice set. The coaches and host had their own Muppet doppelgangers. Crazy drummer Animal sat in Adam Levine's chair, blond rocker Janice was in Christina's seat, funny Fozzie Bear served as Blake Shelton's alter-ego, a special CeeLo muppet sat in for CeeLo and Gonzo hosted in Carson Daly's place.
A pre-taped Voice confessional aired with these memorable lines about pre-show rituals: I "make sure my Scottish accent sounds believable," said Terry McDermott. CeeLo said, "I pray for the spirit of Christina Aguilera to come into me." Blake said he likes to consume "vodka, anything fried."
Second round of callbacks: Team Adam's Amanda Brown moved on.
And another performance. Contenders Cody Belew, Terry, Nicholas David and Melanie Martinez took seats onstage to sing Plain White T's Rhythm of Love, with Melanie struggling to project her soft voice.
We were directed to a video of the top eight on Carson's radio show. The segment reminded us that Carson gets up really, really early.
Third round of callbacks: Team Adam's Melanie made the top six, meaning both of Adam's singers were sent through.
It was time for another song. Cassadee and Dez Duron dueted with I Hate That I Love You by Rihanna and Ne-Yo. Though they're arguably the two hotties of the show, there was little chemistry in that performance.
Fourth round of callbacks: Team Blake's Nicholas.
Cody, Trevin, Dez and Terry remained.
Final round of callbacks: Team Blake's Terry and Team CeeLo's Trevin Hunte.
Going home: Team Christina's Dez and Team CeeLo's Cody.
The next round of performances are Monday, 8 ET/PT, NBC.
